"Cancer Saved my Life" A BIRTHDAY PRESENTTHAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER Not long after my 40th birthday, I was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer and given six months to live. I did live and I still live, because rather than choose medical intervention, I embarked on a journey to discover how my body works, for I believed that if I could unlock that secret, my body would heal naturally. That is exactly what happened. This is a very brief account of that journey and what I discovered. My full version of "Cancer Saved my Life will be published in 2006. I had once thought I was bullet proof, believing I was immune to anything like this - that this stuff only happened to other folk, not me. So I lived my life accordingly. The day of reckoning had arrived. My body had put up with an unsustainable lifestyle and now I was left with the consequences. I was lucky in that I'd already attended the funerals of mates and work colleagues whose similar lifestyles had caught up with them in their 30s and early 40s. They weren't so lucky. But even as I attended their funerals, I never gave a second thought to my own potential predicament. It never dawned on me I would succumb to any disease. Apart from irritable bowel syndrome (resulting in much burping, farting and continual heartburn), I had a clean bill of health - or so I thought, as I'd never had a day off work sick (except to play golf or go sailing etc), never got colds or flu. I'd passed the odd bit of blood in the several months leading up to this catastrophic diagnosis, but as any good bloke would, I put that down to piles.
